For Christmas, my mom gave me the book The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time, by Laurie David, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. It has really inspired me to get the whole family around the dinner table together as often as possible. With our work schedules and the kids’ picky eating habits, all too often we end up serving their dinner early and not having dinner ourselves until after they’re fast asleep.
This book has made me realize how important it is to start the family dinner tradition early to establish a routine. David shares ideas for theme nights, conversation topics, the importance of eating healthy, and how to engage your children in meal preparation, in addition to a slew of recipes perfect for family dinners. We still don’t have family dinner every night and when we do it’s hardly ever relaxing, but we’re making progress and each time, we agree, was better than the last.
What kinds of family dinner traditions do you have?
